Transponder

A transceiver on a satellite that automatically transmits signals when it receives predetermined signals. The term "satellite transponder" collectively refers to the satellite's built-in transceiver subsystem that processes the frequency band (transponder bandwidth), amplifies it and retransmits it to another location/terminal/antenna on Earth. A typical satellite has many transponders, each of which can support one or more communication channels. In some limited cases, satellite transponders can transmit data directly to other satellites, this is called a satellite mesh topology. These systems are typically more expensive for end users to build and maintain.
